(Elbtal Records/Lion Crew Records) Jens-Peter “Kid” Salzmann, a veteran of the East German punk scene, began his musical journey in 1982 with the punk rock project Brennende Zahnbürsten, which gave rise to the Mehrzweck Orchester fröhliche Note (MOfN) in 1983. After a brief stint with Schleim-Keim, Kid founded the trio Meldepflicht in 1986, which, after a year and an expansion of its line-up, eventually became Die Küchenspione. The band sees music as an outlet against the daily grind and channels the energy of punk into an expression of their anti-establishment stance. The lyrics are sometimes humorous, as in the ‘Ballad of the Hedgehog’, which takes the form of a fable, and sometimes direct and unvarnished, as in ‘Spießerschwein’, an attack on narrow-mindedness and conformity. Musically, the LP is a wild mix of punk, enriched with Western Bonanza polka, subtle ska influences and a raw, unadulterated attitude.
Die Küchenspione embodied punk in its purest form: raw, direct and uncompromising. The songs are rock-driven, rousing and full of energy. The Uffta rhythm and the snotty, hoarse vocals bring the atmosphere of a Weimar backstreet straight into the living room. Here, punk isn’t just played, it’s lived – an album that brings the rebellious spirit of the scene to life. (Underdog zine)
