(Lion Crew+Black Cat+Elbtal+…) DER REST was formed in the spring of 1984 by members of the MADMANS and ERNST F.ALL. Musically, they occupied a space somewhere between punk, post-punk and new wave. Dressed entirely in black, their style straddled the dystopia of an Orwellian year and the real pressures of the Cold War, set amidst the monotony of the workers’ and peasants’ state. Their lyrics told of everyday life in the GDR, often permeated by metaphorical and seemingly mystical apocalyptic moods. DER REST constantly operated on the very fringes of what the GDR authorities and their security services were prepared to tolerate. In 1985, they took this open conflict to the extreme by deciding to release their own record illegally in West Germany. The ‘Panem et Circensis’ LP has been out of print for decades and has fetched top prices at auctions on various online platforms. It is therefore now being made available again after more than 40 years. The reissue has been kept as faithful to the original as possible: the artwork has been re-laid out using the original photographs and the songs have been restored. The reissue has been supplemented only by a high-quality gatefold cover and an additional insert in the form of a poster featuring information and liner notes from the band, along with a download code. Hand-numbered to 300 copies. The second instalment in the Weimar ‘5300 Series’, which will be followed by further releases throughout 2026 to showcase the city’s rich underground culture. The LP was produced in close collaboration with former and current band members, friends and members of Weimar’s music scene, and is therefore an important part of coming to terms with the past. Anyone who thinks they know everything there is to know about the punk scene in the GDR will be proven wrong here.
