(Lion Crew+Ebtal+Black Cat+…) The first instalment of the Weimar ‘5300 Series’, which will be followed by further releases throughout 2026 with the aim of thoroughly documenting the city’s rich underground culture up to 1989 and making it accessible to all. The series gets off to a spectacular start with the city’s first two punk bands, which, having been formed in 1979, were also among the very first punk bands in the entire GDR and thus played a key role in shaping the emerging scene in Thuringia. Until now, only a single song by Ernst F.All had been released, making the tracks featured here a special premiere. Recorded around 1982 in the rehearsal room, the legendary PCW 1, these historic recordings, with their direct lyrics, offer an insight into the rebellious mindset, aspirations, problems and fears of a newly emerging youth culture that defied the state’s prescribed norms, thereby providing a glimpse into the early days of a scene that was not supposed to exist in the socialist part of Germany and was ruthlessly suppressed by the state. This spirit of resistance is also evident in the Madmans’ recordings published here, which were recorded in the spring of 1983 at an illegal concert in the parish hall of Weimar’s St James’ Church, and which further demonstrate just how skilful the band members were on their instruments even back then. The album also features previously unreleased songs from the rehearsal room dating from around 1982. All the recordings on the album were first All the tracks on the record have been digitised from the original audio tapes and cassettes for the first time, and have undergone extensive mastering and restoration. The split LP comes in a striking gatefold sleeve and includes a 56-page, lavish full-colour booklet in LP format, which recounts the history of the Weimar punk scene in great detail, from its emergence around 1978 to the end of 1983. Packed with comments and interview excerpts from numerous key figures of the time, it is illustrated with many previously unpublished, restored photos from private archives and background information on the Stasi files relating to the Weimar scene. There are also extras such as a Weimar band chart and liner notes written by some band members for all the printed lyrics. The LP was produced in close collaboration with Heldenstadt Anders e.V., former and current band members, friends and members of the Weimar scene, and is thus an important part of historical reappraisal. Anyone who thinks they know everything about the punk scene in the GDR will be proven wrong here. Comes hand-numbered and with a download code.
