(Crucial Response) Who the hell is this band and what the fuck is this name 7INCH BOOTS all about…?! Okay, let’s go way back in time. It’s Germany in the eighties. Chancellor Helmut Kohl has called for the “geistig-moralische Wende” which was basically a call for a conservative rollback. His reign, which was accompanied by plenty of corruption scandals, was of course a constant source of inspiration, happily received by the thriving Punk and Hardcore scene. 7INCH BOOTS were kids of that era. Formed in May 1989, the band consisted of Morten (guitar), Reiner (vocals), Thorsten (drums) and Ilja (bass) who was replaced by Robin soon after they recorded their first demo. Add the chutzpah to counter the latest trends in the scene with the contrasting programs that sometimes seem absurd, such as the bouncy ball as an alternative to a skateboard, and you get a great package of uniqueness – both in music and attitude! Anti-dogmatism rules, being different is great (again). 7INCH BOOTS were ready to mosh – hard and uncompromising. They mixed the best of the then contemporary hardcore sound with a fine pinch of Power Metal a la NASTY SAVAGE and a bootful of KISS. After all it was Gene Simmons who inspired the fearless foursome to choose its name. The Kiss bass player mentioned his ‘…spiked Seven Inch Boot heels…’ on the inner cover of the Kiss Alive! album and left a lasting impression on the bunch. In terms of lyrics, Dutch hardcore band LÄRM were an influence, as were Californian Power Violence masters INFEST – just to get the picture! Although armed with political and social idealism, 7INCH BOOTS did not lack humor, which was reflected in guitarist Morten’s hilarious cartoons. Reading the lyrics thirty-something years after they were penned down, it’s amazing how up-to-date they are, addressing climate change, racism, right wing propaganda, and sexual abuse. Capitalism is humiliating human nature and the environment. Not much has changed! As 7INCH BOOTS wrote in ‘Power Of My Voice’, “… there are some bigger problems than; to be a punk or to be straight… built your own opinion ‘bout what happens in the world!” These lines cannot be corrupted, “’cause that is certain, the only right way!” During their short-lived existence, a new scene was forming in Europe. Kids were starting bands, fanzines and putting on shows. An early highlight was the infamous Wattenscheid festival in September 1990. 7INCH BOOTS, MANLIFTINGBANNER, BETRAY, BREAKIN’ THROUGH and STAND ASIDE were on the bill. The last two had to cancel and instead X-LARGE, VITAKORN, OTHERWISE and POINT OF NO RETURN took the stage. For 7INCH BOOTS it was their last show. Just a few weeks later, they called it quits.
