GENERACJA” M.Wasążnik, R.Jarosz 22.00 EUR / 100zł (PL/ENG)

(Ha!art) “GENERACJA” is a joint publication by Michał Wasążnik and Robert Jarosz, comprising an original album of 160 photographs by Wasążnik and a spoken essay by Jarosz. “Generacja” presents the artists, places and events that shaped the identity of alternative culture, and provides a verbal and visual documentation of the Warsaw punk and reggae scene in the first half of the 1980s, set against the backdrop of cultural and political events in Poland and around the world. The book’s narrative centres on the adventures of the Warsaw bands Kryzys, Tilt, Brygada Kryzys, TZN Xenna, Deuter, Dezerter and Izrael. The protagonists of *Generation* are people who came of age in Poland between 1978 and 1980. Given the socio-economic situation of ‘real socialism’ at the time, they adopted the punk motto ‘do it yourself’ in their own unique way: they formed bands, published independent magazines, organised music festivals and set up their own music distribution networks. Without hesitation, they co-opted official – that is, state-run – structures and venues into their activities, thereby appropriating a sphere of reality that remained under state control. A key point of reference for ‘Generation’ is the Jarocin Festival – which is celebrating its thirtieth anniversary this year – which, between 1982 and 1986, was a seething melting pot and the most important forum for artistic presentations of Polish rock.
